Gets fifth-year option declined
The Broncos informed Wilson on Wednesday that they won't exercise his fifth-year team option for 2025, Jeff Legwold of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wilson, whom the Jets took with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, joined the Broncos in a trade shortly before April's draft. With Denver not in line to pick up his fifth-year option -- which would have been for a guaranteed $22.4 million -- the 24 year-old will become a free agent next March. For now, Wilson is slated to compete with first-round rookie Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham -- who started Denver's final two games of the 2023 regular season -- for the Week 1 starting assignment. While Nix is presumably viewed as the franchise's long-term answer at quarterback, in the short term, slotting at the position is up for grabs in advance of training camp.

Not at voluntary workouts
Wilson, who remains on the trade block, is not participating in the initial set of the Jets' voluntary workouts, Rich Cimini of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The embattled 2021 second overall pick was already granted permission to seek a trade in February, but nothing of significance has developed on that front. Jets general manager Joe Douglas acknowledged Wilson had every right to not be at workouts, due to both their voluntary classification and the fact the young signal-caller doesn't want to risk injury. Both Douglas and owner Woody Johnson have labeled Wilson an "asset," and they haven't ruled out keeping him on the roster if a trade doesn't materialize.

2023
2022
2021
Wilson was thrown into a starting role to begin his NFL career after being drafted second overall in 2021, but his 15:18 TD:INT in 22 starts suggests the former BYU standout would have been better off learning behind a veteran quarterback. Better late than never for Wilson, who will now get a chance to sit behind his childhood idol Aaron Rodgers. The Jets are hoping Wilson won't have to see the field in 2023, but if he's forced into action, Wilson will try to improve his questionable decision-making and poor accuracy so that his natural talent can finally shine through.
